Pell welcomes Govt support for WYD08

Sydney's Cardinal George Pell yesterday thanked Prime Minister John Howard for the Federal Government's financial support for World Youth Day.

The support totals $35 million, which represents an increase on the previous $20 million promise.

Cardinal Pell also thanked the PM for the Government's decision to provide international pilgrims with free three-month visas for the event.

Cardinal Pell said: "The Prime Minister has been a very strong supporter of World Youth Day 2008 and we remain grateful for his personal commitment to the event and for the support of the government at all levels."

He said that the funding would go towards providing at least 3.5 million meals, and more than 200,000 backpacks to pilgrims.

It will also fund additional showers and toilets at some accommodation centres.
