Vatican cardinal asks Islamic leaders to condemn terror

The president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue has called upon Islamic leaders to be more vocal in condemning terrorism and religious violence.

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran told an audience in London that many responsible Muslim leaders oppose the use of violence and preach a non-violent faith.

But those religious leaders "need to be more vocal," he said.

The French-born cardinal, who was once the Vatican's top foreign-affairs official, reminded his audience that there is no single acknowledged authority in Islam to interpret the Qu'ran, with its many different references to religious conflict and jihad.

"It is a great difficulty that there are many voices of living Islam," he said, with some insisting that Islam is a religion of peace and others advocating violence against other faiths. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
