Warnings follow Greek voters' extremist shift

The president of Greece's Catholic Bishops' Conference has warned that Sunday's election may have dangerous consequences.

The vote saw the collapse of support for parties responsible for enforcing an EU-backed austerity programme.

"This has been a vote of no-confidence in the two main parties, New Democracy and Pasok, who've ruled our country for years and led it to the disaster we face today. It may not mark a good turning-point," said Bishop Fragiskos Papamanolis of Syros and Santorini.

"People are starving here, and we've nothing left to give those who knock on our doors."

The bishop told the Italian SIR news service he was alarmed at the "fragmented political picture" after the election, which brought a sharp rise in votes for small radical parties on the far-right and far-left.
