A get-out clause for ungodly behaviour (Opinion)

Three facts and a question:

1. The Australian institution that has the greatest stench emanating from the widespread practice, over generations, of many of its officials having sexual contact with children, and subsequently covering it up, is the Australian Catholic Church.

2. Section 316 of the Crimes Act 1990 - passed by the Federal Parliament, acting for the good of all Australians - makes it mandatory for Australians to report to police any reasonable suspicion that a crime has been committed, and of course that includes one of the worst crimes of all, paedophilia.

3. Last week, leaders of the Catholic Church of Australia - the very institution most responsible for the crime of paedophilia, did I mention? - argued for exceptionalism against Section 316 in its case.

On 7.30 and on Steve Price's 2GB show, Father Frank Brennan said that should he become aware of such crimes while receiving confession, he would not report it to the police - and he would sooner go to jail first.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

And yes, I do feel furious about the aforementioned issue - and I am not alone.

After my rant a fortnight ago about the Catholic cover-up of terrible cases of paedophilia by priests, as revealed by Four Corners, I have received some extremely troubling emails from readers giving their own experiences.

Some of them pointed me towards the website brokenrites.alphalink .com.au, which has been ''fighting church sexual abuse since 1993'' and details cases of such abuse, while helping to co-ordinate legal action against it. Read it and weep.

The true question is not why I am angry about it, but why aren't you?
