The leading executive of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) has launched an outspoken attack on changes to Catholic worship introduced since the Second Vatican Council.Mgr Andrew Wadsworth criticised the closing Mass of the recent International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) as harking back to immediately after Vatican II with its absence of Latin and Gregorian chant.
Speaking in Salt Lake City on 27 June he complained of the "appalling banality of much liturgical music and the lack of any true liturgical spirit in the use of music", which he said had helped produce an "anti-liturgical culture."
While he said there have been some "very positive developments in the wake of the liturgical reforms", Mgr Wadsworth warned about the negative changes to the liturgy and improvements that could be made.
