Number of women clergy in Church of England passes 3,500

The number of female clergy in the Church of England has passed 3,500 according to the latest figures released by the Church of England.
Women accounted for 49 per cent or 245 of 2011's 504 ordinations.

The statistics, which do not include this year's ordinations, show that the total number of ordained C of E clergy - stipendiary and non-stipendiary, male and female - in 2011 reached 11,418, with women making up 31 per cent of the total.

The figures also show that while 23 per cent of the total stipendiary clergy are female, women make up more than half (54 per cent) of non-stipendiary positions.

Of the C of E's 3,575 female clergy, 46 per cent are in unpaid positions, compared to only 18 per cent of 7,843 male clergy.
