Pope names new auxiliary bishop for Edmonton

Rev. Gregory Bittman, 52, was named to the post by Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday. His main role will be to assist the Archbishop of Edmonton, Rev. Richard W. Smith.

Bittman was ordained into the priesthood at St. Joseph’s Basilica in 1996 by the archbishop at the time, Joseph MacNeil, and has since served in a number of Alberta communities, including St. Albert, Gibbons, Daysland and Stettler.

He was appointed chancellor of the archdiocese in 2000 and has also served as a judicial vicar and as the spiritual director to seminarians.

The archdiocese operates 126 parishes that serve a Catholic population of 378,545.
