The Russian parliament is poised to ban “baby boxes”—heated incubators in which mothers can anonymously leave a newborn child.
Nineteen baby boxes have been installed in Russia since 2011,
according to the Vatican newspaper, and hospitals are automatically
alerted of a baby’s placement in the box within thirty seconds.
Fifty
children’s lives have been saved, according to a BBC report.
Yelena Mizulina, the lawmaker who is leading the effort to ban baby
boxes, said that the practice encourages child trafficking and
abandonment.
