Pope warns against double-life 'scandal'

Pope Francis on Thursday warned Catholics against leading a double life during morning Mass at the Vatican guesthouse where he resides."What is scandal?" asked the pope.

"Scandal is saying one thing and doing another: it's leading a double life," he continued.

"Double life in everything: I am very Catholic, I always go to Mass, I belong to this and that association, but I do not lead a Christian life, I don't pay my employees a fair wage, I exploit people, I have dirty business dealings, I engage in money laundering… Double life," Francis said.

"Many Catholics are like this" he concluded.

February - Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Almighty and beneficent God! who didst impose upon our mother Eve, in punishment for her sin, that she should give birth to her children in pain:

I offer to Thee all the pains which I have thus suffered in atonement for my sins, and thank Thee, that I have safely brought a child into the world, whom I now offer to Thee, according to the example of the Mother of Thine only-begotten Son, for Thy holy service, whom I shall zealously endeavor to educate for Thy honor.

Give me but this grace through the intercession and merits of this most blessed Mother.

Bless me and my child, and grant, that we may here live in accordance with Thy divine will, and receive eternal salvation.

Through Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

SpSCy10KVKoQ7vSpUqhD//ZThe remains of Tasmania's first Catholic Bishop, Robert William Willson, will be flown to Hobart after being exhumed from a crypt at Nottingham's St Barnabas Cathedral.

More than 10 years after the official request was made, it is hoped Bishop Willson will be laid to rest in a newly completed crypt at St Mary's Cathedral later this month.

Born in Lincoln, England, in 1794, and ordained in 1824, Bishop Willson worked in Nottingham as a pastor for 18 years before travelling to Hobart in 1844.

Upon hearing of his departure to Tasmania, the people of Nottingham petitioned the Pope saying the news was "very upsetting", said Hobart Archbishop Julian Porteous.

"Such was the recognition by people right across the religious divide," he added.
"When Bishop Willson came to Hobart he found it to be a very depressing place ... he was immediately struck when he saw convicts in chains led through the streets."

Bishop Willson is recorded in the Archdiocese of Hobart's history as "a leader in advocating reforms in penal discipline and a more humane treatment of insane persons".

He also campaigned against the use of the lash and partial suffocation torture of convicts.

Hobart's Catholic history credits Bishop Willson of lobbying London politicians to close "the most horrible penal settlement of Australia", Norfolk Island.

Bishop Willson had planned to live out his retirement in Hobart, where he had purchased a pub near St Mary's Cathedral.

During one of his regular visits back to England, he suffered a severe stroke and died a year later, in 1866.

In 2005, an official request was made by the Archdiocese of Hobart for Bishop Willson to return to the place he had hoped to retire.

"It was always his intention and his wish to come back to Tasmania," Archbishop Porteous said.

"He very much saw himself as living out his retirement here in Tasmania."

Climate change more urgent than Amoris Laetitia: PNG cardinal

Image result for Cardinal John RibatHuge tides and waves linked to climate change are already forcing people from their homes, says Cardinal John Ribat of Port Moresby.

While many in the Church were pulling out their hair trying to resolve the Amoris Laetitia communion debate, Papua New Guinea's new cardinal said his country had a much more immediate problem.

"For us, Amoris Laetitia will always be there," Cardinal Ribat told CNA.

"You can have time to talk about this," he said, but stressed his country is facing one major problem that can't wait for a solution: climate change.

"It is really the biggest issue for us. We cannot keep quiet about it. We have to come out with it," he said, noting that the "king tides, king waves" and rough winds "belting" the island nation are already forcing many people from their homes.

These are the things "we cannot stop. They continue to come, and they are more powerful than us," the Cardinal said, explaining that while temporary sea walls have been set up, "they won't hold".

"Our situation, it's timely, you either talk about it or you see these people finished ... There's not timing for it. The time is either now or never."

Cardinal Ribat said his red hat was timely above all because it allows him to have more heft when voicing the country's concerns, particularly on the issue of climate change.

"It's happening at this time and we don't know where it is coming from and why it is happening ... we have islands disappearing, being washed because of the high-rise sea level and people there, they have to move," he said, noting that many of the smaller islands "are not able to sustain themselves" for much longer.

Cardinal overrules girls' basketball ban

Basketball teamCardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, has ruled that a Catholic basketball team that chose to forfeit its season, rather than kick out two girls, will be allowed to complete its schedule with its roster intact.

Fifth-graders from St John the Apostle in Clark, N.J., had been playing with two girls on the team for several years until the league's director told them that the 10-year-old girls should never have been allowed on the team, and that it could not play any more games with them.

The nine boys voted unanimously to "stay as a team" with the girls.

On Wednesday, the archdiocese of Newark reversed its ruling, saying that the children representing St John's "should not have been penalised for mistakes that adults responsible for following the league rules may have made."

The news was received with joy by the team, which chanted, as it had when it decided last week to forfeit its season, "Unity! Unity!"

"This is all we ever wanted," Keisha Martel, a parent of one of the girls and a coach of the team, told NJ Advance Media. "The Cardinal and our pastor from the beginning supported us, and we understand that it was on the advice of counsel and the CYO league director that the Cardinal rescinded his decision. For him to overturn the CYO league director's decision speaks volumes, and we are so grateful."

"We want the children to play for the very reasons CYO sports leagues were established: to provide a source of both recreation and reaffirmation of our Christian faith," Cardinal Tobin said in a news release.

La Civiltà Cattolica's global vision of the Church

Fr Antonio Spadaro SJJesuit Fr Antonio Spadaro, editor of La Civiltà Cattolica, which has just launched a series of international editions, agrees that the magazine is a "barometer of the Church", in an interview with La Croix International.

In what way is La Civiltà Cattolica a "barometer of the Church" as an Italian newspaper expressed it recently?

Fr Spadaro: It is a barometer because it enables us to have a global vision of the Church over the course of the years. Since its foundation in 1850, La Civiltà Cattolica has always been linked to history, that of Italy which was not yet a nation, and that of the Church, and particularly that of the popes. The magazine has always reflected the feeling of the Church with respect to the time in which it was situated.

Do you see it as an avant-garde magazine concerning papal teaching or more as moving alongside the popes?

There is no single isolated line. However, La Civiltà Cattolica has always been linked to the Holy See. While the Secretariat of State normally reads the proofs, each pope has had a different relationship with the magazine. John XXIII himself read the proofs. Paul VI was close to the magazine and read it every week. Let's say it is an authorised magazine that has always been in harmony with the thought of the Holy See.

That does not stop it from being attacked regularly.

That is part of the very identity of the magazine. In preparing the 4000th edition, I looked at the 3000th edition. The editorial could very well have been written today! At the time, Pope Paul VI and the Church were also under attack. In fact, these attacks are a privilege because, through us, it is Pope Francis who is being attacked.

Vatican freezes 2 million euro over laundering fears

Vatican BankVatican City authorities have frozen more than €2 million ($3 million) worth of assets over suspicions of money laundering that took place in 2016.

The action is the latest move in Pope Francis's drive to clean up the finances of the Holy See, its chief magistrate said.

Gian Pietro Milano, the tiny state's Promoter of Justice, said it brings the total amount frozen between 2013 and 2016 to €13m (£11.1m).

The latest asset freeze followed alerts from the Vatican Financial Intelligence Authority, which has been given more power by the Pope.

No further details of what lay behind the actions were released, but Mr Milano said that two cases led to indictments and three were shelved.

Mr Milano said the Vatican had "closed the gap" on meeting international standards regarding monitoring, reporting, investigating and prosecuting financial irregularities.

No one can change the way sacraments work: Müller

Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the Vatican's doctrinal chief, says individual bishops cannot reinterpret Church teaching subjectively.

In an interview with the German magazine Rheinische Post, Cardinal Müller said it was "not his style" to criticise publications by bishops.

However, he added, "I do not think it is particularly beneficial for each individual bishop to comment on papal documents to explain how he subjectively understands the document."

In recent weeks, the bishops of Malta and Germany have issued guidelines permitting Communion for the remarried.

The Maltese bishops said that it might be "impossible" for some couples to avoid sex, and that people could not be refused Communion if they discerned that they were "at peace with God".

However, several bishops have affirmed the traditional teaching that the remarried cannot receive Communion, except when they endeavour to live "in complete continence".

"It cannot be that the universally binding doctrine of the Church, formulated by the Pope, is given different and even contradictory regional interpretations. The basis of the Church is the unity of faith. The Church no longer experiences a new revelation," he said.

Cardinal Müller also said that, in order to be absolved of adultery, a penitent must resolve not to sin again. He said: "No one can alter the sacraments as a means of grace according to their own choice – for example, so that the sacrament of Confession can be given without the intention to sin no more."

Elsewhere in the interview, the Cardinal said he thought papal resignations would remain a rare exception in future. He also said that it was important to honour Church leaders because of their role, not just because of their human qualities.

"Everyone is weak and mortal," he said. "Jesus did not choose the wisest, the richest, and the most prominent among his apostles, but simple people, craftsmen, fishermen. We depend on the grace of God and not on what we achieve every day.

The other two were Mgrs Julius Jia Zhiguo of Zhengding and the late Zhou Shanu of Yixian, both in Hebei.
